the Twins

The Last Jedi

The Twins are a volatile binary star system whose gravitational tides and shifting magnetic fields make them at once a navigational threat and a means of concealment. For Jax Pavan and the crew of the Far Ranger, the stars become the setting for a desperate escape: their turbulence threatens to destroy the ship, but its unpredictable forces also help Jax break through an encirclement and flee pursuit.

Setting and Navigation

The Twins lie along Myto’s Arrow, a narrow corridor running from the fringes of the galaxy directly to Dantooine through unstable space. The binary system’s gravitational tides stress the surrounding region, while its heavily fluctuating magnetic fields can cloak a ship’s changes in attitude as it passes. This combination gives the route an unusual tactical possibility: a master pilot pursued by an enemy could enter the binary’s gravity coil, drop out of hyperspace briefly to make a radical course change, and jump again in a different direction before the pursuer works out where the ship has gone. The maneuver is presented as a theoretical advantage of the system, not a safe or routine passage.

The route choice exposes the competing priorities of the travelers. Laranth and I-Five argue for a direct passage into Wild Space and then Myto’s Arrow; Tuden Sal and Thi Xon Yimmon prefer the more ordinary alternative of traveling along a heavily used trade lane. Sal proposes making port on Bandomeer, but Laranth objects that the planet still has a pronounced Imperial presence after Darth Vader crushed the miners’ revolt there the previous year. The Twins therefore matter before the pursuit begins: Myto’s Arrow is a risky route, but the alternatives are not free of danger either.

The Far Ranger’s Flight

When the danger closes around the Far Ranger, ships emerge from hyperspace on every side. Though millions of kilometers away, the Twins still set the void ablaze with their stellar display. The approaching vessels form a rough half-sphere around the Far Ranger and move to cut off its retreat. Den Dhur recognizes the trap, while Laranth asks whether the attackers are Imperial. The system’s immense scale does not make the crew feel safe; it frames their ship as a small, enclosed target with few apparent ways out.

Jax takes the Far Ranger toward the stars’ dangerous matter. A blue-white river of stellar substance looms closer, its individual fingers recalling what the crew calls Vader’s Fist. The ship bucks and then seems to move through taffy as the flow of matter between the stars stretches and buffets it. Jax tilts the bow slightly down and to port, skimming the stream’s edge rather than steering into its heart. The ship resists, pulled toward the white dwarf, but he holds his course between the dwarf and its giant companion, through the hot plasma being siphoned from the smaller, denser star. The passage is not a clean escape: the Far Ranger is battered by the inferno, and its hull temperature spikes.

Escape and Aftermath

The Far Ranger does not carry its passengers clear. In the aftermath, Jax gathers the miisai tree and the only blaster of Laranth’s that remains intact, then touches her ruined face. Her flesh is cold. With the ship shuddering and time limited, he reaches the life pod, where Den is trying to reconnect wires at I-Five’s neck. Jax launches the pod, and seconds later it is flying through the Twins’ tidal bore. They endure the stars’ gravity for agonizing moments before finally reaching safety. In the capsule’s relative silence, Den looks at the tree in Jax’s lap, a surviving object carried out of the wreckage alongside the broken companions.

At the fringes of the Twins’ gravity well, the Rangers’ small stealthy vessels, known as darts, collect the life pod. They dock with it, transfer Jax and his companions to Aren Folee’s ship, and carry them back to Toprawa. The system thus remains part of the escape even after the Far Ranger is lost: the pod must first survive the region that nearly destroyed the larger ship before help can reach it. Jax spends the journey in mental lockdown, keeping his anguish from surfacing because he fears that even a whimper could expose him. He believes Darth Vader will take him for dead, destroyed by the Twins’ plasmatic inferno. The binary stars are therefore both the apparent grave of the Far Ranger and the hazardous passage through which its survivors escape.
